Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying:
مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ كَانَ كَصِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ
He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal. it would be as if he fasted perpetually.
Sahih Muslim (1164)
- Fasting six days during the month of Shawwal after Ramadan is a recommended practice in Islam.
- Fasting these six days is considered a Sunnah mu’akkadah (highly recommended), and while it’s not obligatory, it carries significant rewards.
- It’s important to note that these six days can be fasted consecutively or separately throughout the month of Shawwal. However, it’s recommended to avoid fasting on Eid al-Fitr itself and to begin these six fasts after the day of Eid.
